Introducing our 2020 Judges

Profile ANN ALCOCK

Following her studies in photography, Ann Alcock wrote and photographed for rural magazines and newspapers. Ann has led seven successful PhotoVoice projects including Focus on Domestic Violence and Life as it is With Aspergers. Her photographic books and writing include Frocks, Country Halls and Deb Balls in collaboration with Nicki Laws, The Mail Must Get Through With Alwyn Becker and A Passion for Racing. Ann has previously conducted photographic workshops and judged photographic competitions, including several country shows.

Profile KARA GLENN-SMITH

Kara Glenn-Smith’s career in the photography industry spans over 35 years, in photographic printing and photography. Being the principal wedding photographer in partnership with her husband Brad, Photographic Art wedding photography studio was established on the Gold Coast for 22 years. During her career, Kara has been a teacher and mentor of photography as well as guest judge at various photographic competitions.

Retiring from the wedding scene and dreaming of a tree change, Brad & Kara moved to the hamlet town of Pechey, atop of The Great Diving Range where she is surrounded by agricultural farms, artisan producers and tourism.

Kara now spends her time as a freelance landscape and commercial photographer and website designer. She volunteers in a promotions role for community tourism group, the High Country Hamlets.

Profile JULIE RAMSEY

Julie Ramsey’s passion for photography began when she received a camera for her twelfth birthday. In 2009, Julie completed a Diploma in Photo Imaging at SQIT in Toowoomba. The following year, she completed an Art Photography course. Julie has worked as a photographer for the Chronicle and Style Magazine, and shot weddings, family portraits and graduations. She has participated in a number of photography exhibitions and has had the opportunity to assist in judging several photography competitions. Julie enjoys landscape and nature photography and particularly enjoys the challenge of capturing the quality of light and the minute details found in nature. Having a property near Inglewood, on Mosquito Creek Road, which is a significant birding hotspot, has enabled her to indulge in her latest obsession – bird photography.

Profile COSTA GEORGIADIS

Costa Georgiadis has happily agreed to assist with the judging of the Schools’ category this year. Costa describes himself as a landscape architect, environmental educator & TV host. He worked as a landscaper whilst studying landscape architecture at the University of NSW, where he developed an interest in sustainability He encourages us all to tread lightly upon the earth, and to live in harmony with our surroundings, irrespective of where we live. He is widely known and loved for his role as compere of ABC’s long-running “Gardening Australia” programme.

Costa is the ambassador for Junior Landcare 2020. He sees passing on that passion for stewardship of the environment to the next generation as being crucial. He encourages children to learn about the environment around them and how to protect it. Affording the next generation opportunities to explore activities focused on biodiversity, food production, Indigenous perspectives and waste management are his passion and “Get out, get active and make a difference” is his motto.

Profile Joan van Kuijck

Like all women on the land, Joan probably under-estimates her talents! For four decades she has provided teaching and educational opportunities to students and adults in regional and remote communities in Qld and the NT. Her passion for the land stems from her early upbringing in western Qld and her desire to improve educational and technological opportunities for those living west of the Great Divide has seen her combine her two great loves in life – imparting knowledge and looking after the land.

Apart from classroom and administration roles in private, state school and TAFE systems, Joan has authored a number of historical books as well as business and communication textbooks for Qld high school students. She has conducted basic, intermediate and advanced computing courses for TAFE, Main Roads, Feedlots and Landcare groups throughout Qld, and she now designs and runs websites for a number of private rural enterprises.

Joan has always been a steward for local show societies, has her own farm in the North East Landcare area, and currently volunteers her technical expertise for a number of local community groups such as the Maclagan Squeezebox Festival, the Bell Birdwatching Group and various rural Men’s Sheds.
